Pool Safety Guidelines - Palm Springs Beach Abode

Guide to Pool Safety Signs

In an emergency, clear CPR instructions can save lives. Displaying a compliant and easy to read pool safety sign is critical in ensuring your family and guests are prepared for any situation.

CPR Sign Requirements for Pools and Spas

As an owner or manager of a property with a swimming pool or spa, the Australian Pool Safety Standard requires you to have the correct CPR pool safety signage displayed.

Compliant CPR signs must include the following:

  1. CPR Instructions: The sign must show how to perform CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guideline 8.
  2. Emergency Actions: It must include a statement explaining how to act in an emergency such as Call 000.

CPR signs must also ensure the following:

  • Placement: Be securely attached  near the pool in a location where it is clearly visible.
  • Size: Measure a minimum of 300mm x 300mm to ensure adequate visibility and legibility of safety instructions.
  • Material: Be crafted from durable and weatherproof material capable of withstanding outdoor conditions.
  • Condition: Remain in good condition and be easily readable from a distance of at least 3 metres.
  • Printing Date: Include the year of printing for reference.

In New South Wales, CPR signs must also include the following statements:

  • "Young children should be actively supervised when using this swimming pool."
  • "Pool gates must be closed at all times."
  • "Keep articles, objects, and structures clear of the pool fence at all times."

National Compliance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guideline 8

Since 1 January 2017, all newly constructed pools and any replaced CPR signs are required to comply with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guideline 8. This ensures that all signage adheres to the latest safety standards, providing vital instructions during emergencies.

Existing CPR signage with the earlier Guideline 7 remains acceptable if it is clear and legible. However, any damaged or unreadable Guideline 7 signage must be replaced with an updated Guideline 8-compliant sign.

Regional Variations in Pool Safety Laws

Pool safety regulations vary across Australian states. It’s important to check with your local council or refer to state government websites for accurate and up-to-date information on compliance requirements.

Engaging a licensed Pool Safety Inspector is recommended if you are unsure about compliance. They can help assess your pool and identify areas that may need improvement to meet local regulations.

Where should a CPR Sign be located?

Placing your CPR sign in the right location is essential for accessibility during an emergency. Ideally, the sign should be located near the shallow end of the pool, by the steps or where someone is most likely to perform CPR.

The sign must be easily visible to anyone using your swimming pool.
